What is the Calgary Stampede?
The Calgary Stampede is much more than a rodeo.
For ten days every July, Calgary celebrates its western heritage with world-class rodeo competitions, chuckwagon races, concerts, midway rides, incredible food, Indigenous culture, agricultural showcases, family entertainment, and one of the largest outdoor festivals in the world.
Known as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede has welcomed millions of visitors since it was first held in 1912. What began as the vision of American trick roper Guy Weadick to celebrate the spirit of the Canadian West has grown into one of Canada’s most iconic events, attracting more than 1.3 million visitors each year.
While the rodeo remains at the heart of the festival, today’s Stampede offers something for everyone. When is the Calgary Stampede?
The Calgary Stampede runs from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 12, 2026, with Sneak-A-Peek kicking things off the evening before.
If you’ve never been before, Sneak-A-Peek is one of Calgary’s favourite traditions. It gives visitors early access to the midway rides, games, and food before the official opening day, all at a discounted admission price.

Some of the biggest events happen on specific days throughout the festival, including the Parade, Family Day, Community Day, and Kids’ Day, so it’s worth planning your visit around what matters most to you.
Wandering Tip: If your schedule is flexible, we’d recommend planning around one of the Value Days. Not only can you save on admission, but some of these days also include free breakfasts, family programming, and special events that make your visit even better.

One of the questions we get asked every year is whether general admission is enough or if you need to buy tickets for everything once you’re inside.
The good news is that your admission ticket includes far more than most people expect.

If you’re planning to attend the Rodeo or the Evening Show, remember that purchasing those tickets in advance already includes your admission to Stampede Park for that day. It’s one of the easiest ways to get more value if those experiences are already on your list.

- Free admission from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. following the Calgary Stampede Parade.
Tim Hortons Family Day
Sunday, July 5
- Free admission until 11:00 a.m.
- Free pancake breakfast from 8:00–10:00 a.m. (while quantities last)
- Free variety show from 8:00–10:00 a.m.
TC Energy Community Day
Tuesday, July 7
- Free admission for everyone from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
- Seniors (65+) and Military Veterans receive free admission all day, plus complimentary coffee and donuts until 11:00 a.m., while quantities last.
BMO Kids’ Day
Wednesday, July 8
- Free admission for everyone until 11:00 a.m.
- Children 12 and under receive free admission all day
- Free breakfast and variety show from 8:00–10:00 a.m.
Wandering Tip: If you’re trying to save money, we’d plan your visit around a Value Day, take Calgary Transit, bring a reusable water bottle, and share your midway food. You’ll be surprised how much you can experience without spending a fortune.

What Can You Do at the Calgary Stampede?
Tone of the biggest misconceptions about the Calgary Stampede is that it’s just rides and rodeo.
While those are certainly two of the biggest attractions, they’re only a small part of what makes Stampede so special. In fact, you could easily spend an entire day on the grounds without going on a single ride and still leave feeling like you experienced the best of it.
Every year we discover something new, whether it’s a hidden agricultural competition, an incredible live performance, or a free experience we never knew existed. That’s one of the reasons we keep coming back.

Is One Day Enough?
This is probably the question we get asked more than any other.
Our answer: It depends on what kind of Stampede experience you’re looking for.
If your goal is simply to experience the Calgary Stampede, one full day is absolutely enough.
In one day you can comfortably:
- Explore the Agriculture Zone and animal barns
- Wander through the BMO Centre
- Watch several free performances
- Ride a few midway rides
- Try some iconic Stampede food
- Visit Elbow River Camp
- Catch a Coca-Cola Stage concert
- Finish the evening watching the fireworks
Where one day starts to feel rushed is when you also want to:
- Spend several hours riding the midway
- Watch the Rodeo
- Attend the Evening Show
- Wait in line for popular concerts
- Explore every exhibit and attraction
- Stop and enjoy everything instead of rushing between experiences
That’s why we usually recommend two days for first-time visitors.
One day lets you experience Stampede.
Two days lets you actually enjoy it.
If you’re travelling to Calgary specifically for Stampede, we’d even suggest staying two or three nights. That gives you time to experience the festival without feeling like you’re constantly watching the clock.

Ways to Save Money at the Calgary Stampede
Let’s be honest.
The Calgary Stampede can be expensive.
But it doesn’t have to be.
After years of visiting, we’ve learned that a little planning goes a long way. Some of our favourite Stampede days have actually been the ones where we spent the least.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to stretch your budget.
Visit on a Value Day
Planning around one of Stampede’s Value Days can save you the cost of admission while also giving you access to free breakfasts and special programming.
Buy Stampede Bucks
Costco Stampede Bucks are one of the best deals every year. You receive more spending power than you pay for, and they can be used for admission, food, rides, games, merchandise, and more.
Purchase Ride Passes in Advance
If you know you’ll be spending most of your day on the midway, buying a Ride All Day pass before Stampede starts can save you a significant amount compared to purchasing ride tickets inside the park.
Share Your Food
This is probably our biggest tip.
Instead of buying six different meals, share them.
Order one or two classic favourites, split a novelty food, and sample more without spending twice as much.
Bring a Refillable Water Bottle
Calgary gets hot during Stampede.
Instead of spending money on bottled water all day, bring a reusable bottle and refill it throughout the grounds.
Take Calgary Transit
Parking fills up quickly, costs can add up, and leaving the grounds at the end of the night can take longer than you’d expect.
Whenever possible, we take the CTrain.
It’s cheaper, easier, and usually gets you to the gates faster than driving.
Don’t Miss the Free Entertainment
Some of the best experiences at Stampede don’t cost anything beyond your admission.
Spend time watching the Dog Bowl, exploring Elbow River Camp, visiting the Agriculture Zone, catching a Coca-Cola Stage concert, or wandering through the BMO Centre before spending your budget on rides or games.

If We Only Had One Day…
If someone told us they only had one day at the Calgary Stampede, here’s exactly how we’d spend it.
We’d arrive shortly before lunch and take our time exploring the grounds before the crowds really build.
Our first stop would be the Agriculture Zone and the animal barns, followed by a walk through the BMO Centre to see the exhibits, shopping, and free entertainment.
Next, we’d grab one of our Stampede essentials, a Fresh Squeezed Lemonade and a bag of Mini Donuts from the stand closest to the Coca-Cola Stage.
From there, we’d build our afternoon around whatever free entertainment is happening nearby. Some of our favourites include:
- Stampede Powwow
- Monster Energy Compound
- Dog Bowl
- FlyingFools high Dive
- Stage of Wonders
- Stampede Stand-Up!
Once we’ve explored the grounds, we’d hop on the WestJet Skyride for one of the best views of Stampede Park before treating ourselves to one unique midway food.
As the evening rolls around, we’d find a spot at the Coca-Cola Stage for a concert before ending the night with the Stampede fireworks.
Would we see absolutely everything? Probably not.
Would we leave feeling like we experienced the very best of the Calgary Stampede? Absolutely.

The Biggest Mistakes We See First-Time Visitors Make
After years of visiting the Calgary Stampede and answering thousands of questions from our community, we’ve noticed the same mistakes come up year after year.
The good news: every one of them is easy to avoid with a little planning.
Trying to Fit Everything Into One Day
Yes, you can absolutely experience the Calgary Stampede in one day.
No, you probably can’t experience everything.
If your wish list includes midway rides, the Rodeo, the Evening Show, concerts, shopping, free entertainment, animal barns, and trying every crazy food you can find, you’ll spend most of your day rushing from place to place.
Our advice: prioritize the experiences you’re most excited about and leave yourself time to wander. Some of our favourite Stampede memories weren’t planned at all.
If you’re visiting Calgary specifically for Stampede, we’d recommend two days. One day lets you experience it, two days lets you actually enjoy it.
Wearing Brand New Cowboy Boots
Cowboy boots and Stampede go hand in hand.
Blisters don’t.
You’ll easily walk several kilometres throughout the day, especially if you’re exploring the entire park.
Wear comfortable shoes or boots you’ve already broken in. Your feet will thank you by the end of the night.
Underestimating Calgary’s Weather
If there’s one thing Calgary is known for, it’s unpredictable weather.
We’ve experienced sunshine, thunderstorms, hail, heavy rain, and chilly evenings, sometimes all in the same day.
Dress in layers, throw a lightweight rain jacket or poncho into your bag, and don’t forget sunscreen. It’s much easier to remove a layer than wish you’d brought one.
Driving Straight to the Grounds
It might seem easier to drive directly to Stampede Park, but parking is limited, traffic can be frustrating, and leaving after the fireworks often takes much longer than expected.
Whenever we can, we park at a CTrain station and take Calgary Transit to Victoria Park/Stampede Station.
It’s usually cheaper, easier, and significantly less stressful.
Going Without a Plan
This is probably the biggest mistake we see.
The Calgary Stampede is much bigger than most people expect.
Without a rough plan, it’s surprisingly easy to miss experiences you would’ve loved simply because you didn’t know they existed.
You don’t need to schedule every minute of your day, but spending ten minutes looking through the entertainment schedule before you arrive can completely change your experience.

Wanderers’ Tips Before You Go
A little preparation goes a long way at the Calgary Stampede.
These are the small things we do every year that make our day easier, more comfortable, and a lot more enjoyable.
Getting There
Whenever possible, take Calgary Transit.
The Victoria Park/Stampede Station is located right beside the grounds, and avoiding downtown traffic, expensive parking, and long waits at the end of the night is worth it every time.
If you do decide to drive, arrive early and expect road closures around the Parade and during peak evening hours.
What to Pack
You don’t need much, but these are the things we always bring:
- Refillable water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Portable phone charger
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Small backpack or crossbody bag
- Light sweater or jacket
- Compact rain poncho
- Hand sanitizer
- Comfortable walking shoes or broken-in cowboy boots
Keeping your bag light makes a huge difference after several hours on the grounds.
Dress for the Weather
Calgary weather changes quickly.
Start with comfortable clothing, wear breathable layers, and always be prepared for changing conditions.
Even if the forecast looks perfect, we’d still recommend tossing a lightweight rain jacket into your bag.
You’ll be glad you did if the weather changes halfway through your day.
Stay Hydrated
Stampede days are long.
Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the grounds instead of constantly buying bottled water.
You’ll save money and feel much better by the end of the day.

Don’t Miss the Fireworks
Every night of the Calgary Stampede ends with one of our favourite traditions, the nightly fireworks.
While they’re spectacular from inside Stampede Park, you don’t necessarily need an Evening Show ticket to enjoy them.

- Tom Campbell’s Hill
- Max Bell Centre
- Nose Hill Park

If you’re already on the grounds, we love ending the night by grabbing one last snack, finding a place to sit, and watching the fireworks before heading home.
