Calgary’s food scene does not slow down. Here is every notable new restaurant that opened in May 2026 worth knowing about right now, and the ones we’re already planning to visit first.
We keep a running note on our phones. It started as a casual list of places to try and has evolved into something that requires occasional organization because Calgary’s restaurant scene has been genuinely relentless this year. May alone brought Japanese izakayas, a long-awaited Kensington opening, Calgary’s first Shake Shack, an African cuisine spot, a Toronto sushi concept landing in the northwest, and a family-owned Latin American restaurant that is already generating the kind of word of mouth that makes you want to go before the line gets long.
Here is everything that opened in May 2026, what we know about each one, and where they land on our personal radar Every new Calgary restaurant that opened in April 2026.
Nobushi Kitchen + Bar — 1054 17 Ave SW

A new Japanese restaurant on 17th Avenue is not a small thing when you consider how competitive that strip has become. For something to open there and generate genuine excitement it has to bring something specific to the table, and Nobushi Kitchen + Bar appears to be doing exactly that. The concept covers sushi, ramen, and izakaya-style dishes, the kind of menu that works equally well for a proper dinner or a late-night situation when you need something good after 9 PM. 17th Avenue already has strong food options on every block, and Nobushi landing there feels like a natural addition to one of Calgary’s most reliable dining streets.
This one is high on our list. Izakaya-style dining done well is one of our favourite formats, small dishes, shared table, the kind of meal that extends naturally into an evening, and we’re curious to see what Nobushi does with it.
Spicy Wok — 1829 Ranchlands Blvd NW

Ranchlands doesn’t always come up in conversations about Calgary’s food scene, which is exactly why a spot like Spicy Wok matters for that community. Authentic Chinese cuisine spanning Szechuan, Cantonese, and Northeast Chinese dishes in a neighbourhood that deserves more options is a straightforward win. Szechuan in particular has a devoted following in Calgary, and the combination of bold spice, regional variety, and the comfort of genuinely traditional cooking is the kind of thing that builds a loyal regular base quickly. If you’re in the northwest and have been driving further than you should for good Chinese food, Spicy Wok is worth trying.
Stable Palms Club — 1153 Kensington Crescent NW

This is the May opening that has been generating the most anticipation, and from everything we’ve seen and heard, it’s earning that attention. Stable Palms Club brings elevated dining, handcrafted cocktails, and a stylish atmosphere to Kensington, a neighbourhood that has a strong food identity already and now has a spot that leans into the elevated end of the spectrum without losing the character that makes Kensington worth going to in the first place.
Elevated dining and craft cocktails in a space that’s been designed with care is a combination that works particularly well for date nights and celebrations, and Kensington’s walkability makes the whole evening feel more seamless. Dinner, a drink, a walk through the neighbourhood after. This one is firmly on our date night radar and we have a feeling it’s going to be one of the harder reservations to get as the summer progresses.
Shake Shack — CF Chinook Centre

Calgary has been waiting for this one for a while. Shake Shack’s May arrival at CF Chinook Centre is genuinely significant for a city that has watched the brand dominate conversations about American burger culture for years while having no local option to actually try it. The burgers, the crinkle-cut fries, the frozen custard, the shakes, the menu is exactly what you’d expect and that’s entirely the point. Shake Shack has built its following on consistency and quality control, and the lineup that has been forming since opening day tells you that Calgary was ready.
We’ll be honest. We’re curious more than we’re immediately rushing. We’ve had Shake Shack in other cities and we know what it is. But there’s something about finally having it here that makes the visit feel worth doing, and we’ll report back when we go.
Flavours Restaurant — 2702 Centre St N

This is the May opening that we think deserves more attention than it’s getting in the broader Calgary food conversation. Authentic African cuisine is genuinely underrepresented in this city, and Flavours Restaurant on Centre Street N is bringing traditional dishes packed with bold flavours and rich culinary traditions to a neighbourhood that has the community to support it and the appetite for something real and specific rather than generalized.
We believe the best food cities are the ones where you can eat your way around the world without leaving the city limits, and every time a genuinely authentic restaurant opens in Calgary representing a cuisine that hasn’t had a strong local presence, the city gets better. Flavours is exactly that kind of opening and it’s one we’re genuinely looking forward to exploring.
Toro Toro — 39 Crowfoot Terrace NW

The Toronto-born concept made its Calgary debut in May in Crowfoot, and for sushi lovers in the northwest this is significant news. Premium sushi rolls, poke bowls, sushi tacos, and Japanese-inspired dishes. Toro Toro has built a following in Toronto on the strength of creative interpretations of Japanese flavours that feel fresh without being gimmicky, and bringing that concept to the northwest gives that part of the city a sushi option that punches above what’s typically available in suburban Calgary locations.
Sushi tacos specifically are a format we haven’t seen done particularly well in Calgary yet, and we’re curious to see what Toro Toro does with them. This one goes on the list for a northwest day when we’re already out that way.
Punto Latino — 3220 17 Ave SW

A family-owned Latin American restaurant, café, and market serving authentic Colombian and Latin flavours, and the fact that it’s a market as well as a restaurant is what makes this May opening genuinely interesting. The combination of a sit-down dining experience, fresh coffee, and specialty grocery items in one space creates something that’s useful on multiple levels and on multiple kinds of days. A proper Colombian meal on a Saturday afternoon and then picking up specialty ingredients on the way out is the kind of layered experience that makes a restaurant worth returning to regularly rather than just once.
Family-owned spots that bring specific cultural cooking to Calgary without softening it for broader palatability are the kind of places we love to support, and Punto Latino on 17th Avenue SW sounds like exactly that.
IYYC Burgers — Mahogany and Savanna

IYYC Burgers has been building a loyal following in Calgary for a while now, and the May expansion into Mahogany and Savanna is good news for two communities in the southeast that have been watching the brand grow from a distance. Smashed burgers, loaded fries, and comfort food done with genuine care. IYYC has always felt like a Calgary brand that understands its audience, and bringing those locations to established residential communities rather than just high-traffic commercial areas tells you something about how they’re thinking about growth.
If you’re in Mahogany or Savanna and you haven’t tried IYYC yet, the new locations are the reason to finally go.
Our Honest Take on May’s Openings
What we appreciate about this particular group of new restaurants is the range. It’s not five variations on the same concept opening within walking distance of each other. It’s a Japanese izakaya on 17th Avenue, an African cuisine spot on Centre Street, a Latin American market and café, a Toronto sushi brand in the northwest, authentic Chinese regional cooking in Ranchlands, and an elevated cocktail bar in Kensington, all opening within the same month in a city that continues to expand what eating out here can actually mean.
Calgary’s food scene is genuinely getting better and more diverse every year, and May 2026 is the clearest recent evidence of that. We’ll be working through all of these over the coming weeks and sharing the real experience when we get there. If you beat us to any of them, let us know what you thought. We read everything and we want to know which ones are worth moving to the top of the list.
Wander over to whatever’s been calling to you longest, because we believe we are all made to wander and Calgary just gave us a lot of excellent reasons to keep exploring.
