How to Spend 5 Days in Playa del Carmen: Our Complete Couple’s Itinerary (2026 Guide)

When we started planning our trip to Playa del Carmen, we realized something was missing.

There were plenty of blogs listing “50 Things to Do” or recommending luxury all-inclusive resorts, but very few that actually walked us through how to spend a realistic five days in the area.

We wanted an itinerary that balanced exploring with relaxing. Somewhere that included incredible food, unique experiences, beach time, and enough flexibility to make the trip feel like a vacation rather than a checklist.

After spending five days wandering through Playa del Carmen ourselves, we decided to build the guide we wish we’d found before booking.

This isn’t the only way to experience Playa del Carmen, but if you’re looking for a trip that combines local restaurants, unforgettable experiences, beautiful beaches, and a little adventure, this itinerary is a great place to start.

Before You Arrive

We flew into Cancun International Airport before making the drive to Playa del Carmen, which takes a little over an hour depending on traffic.

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make before arriving is whether to rent a car or rely on transportation once you’re there.

We chose to rent a car because we knew we wanted to explore beyond Playa del Carmen, but it’s definitely not the only option. Taxis are readily available throughout the city, airport transportation is easy to arrange, and many attractions offer transfers directly from your accommodation.

We’ll be sharing a complete transportation guide soon, but for this itinerary, just know that either option works depending on how adventurous you want your trip to be.

Day 1: Check Into Your Casa & Settle Into Playa del Carmen

One of the biggest changes we made this trip was skipping the all-inclusive.

Instead, we stayed at Casa Bonita, one of TUT CASA’s beautiful vacation rentals inside the Mareazul community.

To be honest, I wasn’t convinced before arriving.

Every trip we’d taken to Mexico before this had been at an all-inclusive, and I wasn’t sure whether staying in a vacation rental would actually feel like a vacation.

It took about five minutes to prove me wrong.

Our casa had spacious bedrooms, a full kitchen, laundry, beautiful pools, direct beach access, and even our own plunge pool. It felt less like checking into a hotel and more like having our own home in Mexico for the week.

If you’re planning on exploring Playa del Carmen rather than spending every hour inside a resort, we’d genuinely recommend considering this style of accommodation.

After checking in, we headed to the beach, watched the sunset, unpacked, and officially switched into vacation mode.

Stop at Walmart Before You Do Anything Else

One of the smartest decisions we made all week happened before we even unpacked.

We stopped at Walmart.

It might not sound exciting, but having groceries, snacks, bottled water, coffee, and breakfast ready to go made the rest of the trip so much easier.

Rather than spending money every single morning, we could enjoy breakfast at the casa before heading out for the day. We even cooked dinner one evening, which gave us a nice break after several days of eating out.

If you’re staying in a vacation rental, we’d absolutely recommend making this your first stop.

Day 2: Explore Downtown Playa del Carmen

One of our favourite things about Playa del Carmen is that you don’t need an itinerary every minute of the day.

Sometimes the best plan is simply wandering.

We spent the afternoon exploring downtown, popping into local shops before making our way through Quinta Alegría Shopping Mall. It’s a great place to escape the afternoon heat for a little while, grab a coffee, browse international brands, or simply take a break before continuing your walk.

By the evening, 5th Avenue transforms into one of the liveliest streets in the city.

Restaurants spill onto the sidewalks, live music fills the air, street performers entertain crowds, and every block feels a little different from the last. Even if you don’t have dinner plans, it’s worth spending an evening simply walking the avenue and taking it all in.

Don’t Leave Without Eating at El Fogón

If we had one restaurant we’d tell every Wanderer to visit, it’s El Fogón.

It’s one of Playa del Carmen’s most popular local restaurants, and after eating there, we completely understood why.

We originally went for the tacos, but it was actually the steak that completely surprised us. It ended up being one of our favourite meals of the entire trip, and one of our biggest regrets is that we didn’t make time to go back a second time.

If you only have a few days in Playa del Carmen, make this one of your meals.

Day 3: Spend the Day at Xenses Park

If you’re looking for something completely different from a traditional beach day, spend a day at Xenses Park.

Rather than focusing on rides or water slides, Xenses is built around optical illusions, sensory experiences, and interactive attractions that constantly make you question what you’re seeing.

It’s playful, unique, and unlike anything we’ve experienced before.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends, or as a family, it’s one of those attractions that everyone experiences a little differently.

We’ll be sharing a full review of Xenses soon, but it easily earned a spot among our favourite experiences from the trip.

Day 4: Take a Day Trip

One thing we quickly realized is that Playa del Carmen also makes an incredible base for exploring other destinations nearby.

Originally, we planned to visit both Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.

Unfortunately, I ended up getting sick during our trip, so we weren’t able to fit everything in.

That said, they’re both still destinations we’d recommend looking into when planning your itinerary.

Cozumel is famous for its crystal-clear water, snorkeling, scuba diving, scenic coastal drives, and laid-back atmosphere. If you’re looking for a day that revolves around the ocean, it’s hard to beat.

Isla Mujeres offers a completely different experience. It’s known for Playa Norte, colourful streets, and exploring the island by golf cart, making it one of the most popular day trips from Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Day 5: Slow Down Before You Leave

One mistake we often make while travelling is trying to squeeze too much into the final day.

This time, we intentionally slowed things down.

We enjoyed the beach, spent time around the pool, wandered through town one last time, picked up a few souvenirs, and simply appreciated not having anywhere we urgently needed to be.

Sometimes the best memories come from the moments that aren’t planned at all.

Things We’d Do Differently Next Time

No trip is perfect, and honestly, that’s part of the fun.

If we went back tomorrow, we’d definitely spend another day exploring Cozumel and finally make it over to Isla Mujeres.

We’d eat at El Fogón more than once.

We’d plan another evening wandering 5th Avenue without any destination in mind.

And after learning the hard way, we’d be much more careful to drink bottled water throughout the trip.

The nice thing is that none of those feel like mistakes.

They simply gave us a reason to come back.

Don’t Skip Cozumel

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to visit Cozumel because I got sick during our trip, but it’s still one of the biggest recommendations we’d make.

Just a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is famous for its crystal-clear water, snorkeling, scuba diving, and beautiful beaches.

It’s definitely at the top of our list for next time.

Travel Tips

Before you go, don’t forget to pack:
