Hey Wanderers,
April was a busy month for Calgary’s food scene. Here’s everything that opened, what we know so far, and the spots we’re already planning our next visit around.

We have a running note on our phones. It’s not glamorous. It’s basically a disorganized list of restaurant names, neighbourhoods, and the occasional screenshot of a dish that stopped us mid-scroll. Every time something new opens in Calgary that feels worth paying attention to, it goes on the list. April was one of those months where the list got long fast.
That’s not a complaint. Calgary’s food scene has been doing something interesting over the last couple of years, and watching the variety of concepts coming into the city. Not just more of the same, but genuinely different ideas about what going out to eat can feel like, is one of our favourite things to track. April brought a mix of quick drink stops, full dining experiences, a karaoke bar, and honestly a couple of things that don’t fit neatly into any category. We’re going to walk you through all of it.
Some of these we’ve already been to. Some are still sitting on the list waiting for the right weekend. Either way, here’s everything that opened this past month and why we think it’s worth knowing about.

Phizzy Dirty Soda
If you’ve been anywhere near Calgary’s food content lately, you’ve probably seen dirty sodas showing up. Phizzy is the dedicated spot for it. A concept built entirely around customizable fizzy drinks mixed with syrups, cream, and combinations that sound a little chaotic on paper but apparently work in a way that has people going back. The appeal here is obvious: it’s fun, it’s photogenic, and it’s something you can’t really replicate at home without putting in embarrassing effort. We haven’t been yet, but it’s the kind of spot that fits perfectly into a weekend afternoon when you’re already out and looking for a reason to extend the wander.
Bake Me Up
An Asian-inspired café and bakery offering matcha, specialty teas, and fresh baked goods. Which, if you know us, you know is a combination we are constitutionally incapable of walking past. Calgary’s café scene has been growing steadily, and the spots that do something specific well tend to build a loyal following quickly. Bake Me Up is already getting attention, and we’re curious to see whether the baked goods live up to the drink program. A cozy spot for a slow morning or a mid-afternoon reset. This one is near the top of the list.
Foodyard – Carrington
A street-inspired fusion kitchen serving bold comfort food.Loaded dishes, global street food influences, the kind of menu that doesn’t try to be one thing and is better for it. Carrington isn’t always the first neighbourhood that comes up in food conversations, which is exactly why spots like this matter. They bring something worth making the drive for to a part of the city that deserves more of that. We love a concept that commits to flavour over aesthetics, and from what we’ve seen of Foodyard’s menu, they’re not playing it safe. That’s enough to get us there.
Chocoberry
Full disclosure: we are dessert people. We will always order dessert. So a café dedicated entirely to chocolate-loaded waffles, crepes, and indulgent sweets is not something we’re approaching with any pretense of restraint. Chocoberry is the kind of spot that earns its place on a list not because it’s trying to be sophisticated but because it knows exactly what it is and delivers on that without apology. Perfect for when you want something over the top and you’re done pretending you don’t.
Hello Nori

We’ve actually been to this one, and we have a full post about the experience that’s worth reading before you go [Hello Nori Calgary review]. The short version: the Vancouver hand roll bar landed in Calgary and it earned the hype. Counter seating only, hand rolls made fresh and handed to you one at a time, nori that’s actually still crispy when it reaches you. It was Adi’s first time having hand rolls prepared this way and he got it immediately. No convincing required. If you’re a sushi person, this one moves to the top of the list.
Dobré Café
Specialty coffee, teas, fresh pastries, and the kind of relaxed energy that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. Calgary’s independent café scene keeps getting stronger, and Dobré feels like a welcome addition. A place built for the kind of morning where you have nowhere urgent to be and you want to actually taste your coffee rather than just consume it. We haven’t been yet but this one has the quiet, consistent appeal of a spot that becomes a regular without making a big announcement about it.
THE SOJU
A Korean restaurant and karaoke bar with private room experiences. Which is a combination that solves a specific problem very well. Group nights in Calgary can sometimes feel like you’re choosing between a good dinner and something actually fun to do after. THE SOJU is trying to be both in the same building, and we’re genuinely curious whether the food holds up alongside the experience or whether one carries the other. Either way, it’s the kind of spot that earns an automatic yes when someone asks what we should do for a birthday. We’ll report back.
Alforno – West District

An Italian café and bakery offering pastries, coffee, and casual dining. Alforno has built a following in Calgary for doing the simple things well. Good bread, good coffee, an atmosphere that doesn’t try too hard. The West District location brings that to a neighbourhood that’s been growing into its own as a destination, and we’re happy it’s there. If you’ve never been to an Alforno location, this is a good reason to change that.
SUKOSHI — A Bonus Worth Mentioning
Okay, this one isn’t food. But we included it anyway because we think the best wandering isn’t only about where you eat. It’s about what you discover while you’re out. SUKOSHI is a Japanese beauty and lifestyle store offering skincare, makeup, and curated finds, and it’s the kind of shop that makes an afternoon out feel like more of an adventure. If you’re already exploring the area, it’s worth a stop. Consider it a palate cleanser between restaurants.
Our Honest Take on April
What we appreciate about this particular wave of openings is the variety. It’s not ten versions of the same thing. It’s dirty sodas and karaoke bars and hand roll counters and matcha cafés, which means there’s genuinely something here for different kinds of days and different kinds of people. Calgary keeps expanding what a night out, or an afternoon, or a slow Saturday morning can look like, and April was a good reminder of that.
We’ll be working through the rest of this list over the coming weeks and sharing the real experience when we get there. If you beat us to any of these spots, let us know what you thought. Genuinely, we read everything and we want to know if something surprised you.
Wander over to whatever’s been sitting on your list longest, because we believe we are all made to wander and April just gave us a lot of good reasons to.
