“Should I drive, take the CTrain, or Uber?”
The answer depends on where you’re coming from, but for most visitors, we’d recommend Calgary Transit.
During Stampede, hundreds of thousands of people make their way to Stampede Park every day. Roads become congested, parking fills up quickly, and leaving after the Evening Show or fireworks can take much longer than expected.
A little planning before you leave home can save you both time and money.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through every transportation option, from Calgary Transit and Park & Ride to driving, parking, Uber, taxis, walking, and cycling, so you can decide which option works best for your visit.

We’d much rather arrive early, grab a fresh squeezed lemonade, and soak in the atmosphere than start the day feeling rushed.
Calgary Transit (Our Top Recommendation)
The Easiest Way to Get to the Calgary Stampede
If you’re looking for our recommendation, this is it.
Every year, Adi and I take Calgary Transit to Stampede, and we’d recommend it to almost everyone visiting.
Instead of sitting in traffic or searching for parking, we park at a CTrain station in northeast Calgary, ride the train to City Hall Station, transfer to the Red Line, and get off at Victoria Park/Stampede Station.
It’s simple, affordable, and removes one of the biggest stresses of visiting the Calgary Stampede.
During Stampede, Calgary Transit also operates 24-hour CTrain service, extends service on many bus routes, and adds special Stampede routes to help move the large crowds throughout the festival.
Which Station Should You Use?
The Calgary Stampede is served by two CTrain stations.
Choosing the right one can save you quite a bit of walking depending on what you’re planning to see.
Victoria Park/Stampede Station
This is our go-to station and the one we use most often.
It’s the best choice if you’re visiting:
- Scotiabank Saddledome
- Cowboys Casino
- The Big Four Roadhouse
- Monster Energy Compound
- BMO Centre
- Southwest entrance to Stampede Park
For many visitors, especially first-timers, this station offers the most convenient access to the heart of Stampede Park.
Erlton/Stampede Station
If your plans are focused on the south end of the grounds, Erlton is often the better choice.
It’s closest to:
- GMC Stadium
- Coca-Cola Stage
- Nashville North
- Dog Bowl
- South entrances to Stampede Park
If you’re attending the Evening Show, this can be a great station to use depending on where you’re sitting.
Park & Ride
One of the easiest ways to save both time and money is to use Calgary Transit’s Park & Ride system.
Instead of driving into downtown or around Stampede Park, simply park at one of Calgary’s CTrain stations and ride the train the rest of the way.
It’s exactly what we do every year.
You’ll avoid downtown traffic, parking fees, and the frustration of trying to leave Stampede Park after the fireworks.
If you’re coming from outside the downtown core, we think it’s one of the smartest ways to visit the Calgary Stampede.
Expect Crowds
One thing to keep in mind…
You’re definitely not going to have the train to yourself.
During Stampede, trains can become extremely busy, especially in the morning, after concerts, and immediately following the Evening Show and fireworks.
Don’t let that discourage you.
The trains move people surprisingly efficiently, and while you may have to stand for part of your trip, it’s still one of the quickest and least stressful ways to get to Stampede Park.
Why We Choose Transit
Every transportation option has its pros and cons, but Calgary Transit consistently gives us the best experience.
We don’t have to worry about:
- Finding parking.
- Paying expensive parking fees.
- Sitting in traffic before or after Stampede.
- Navigating downtown road closures.
Instead, we can relax, enjoy the ride, and start our Stampede day the moment we step off the train.
Wandering Tip: If you’re planning to use Calgary Transit, load your transit pass or purchase your fare before you arrive at the station. It makes getting on the train much quicker, especially during Stampede when thousands of people are travelling at the same time. And don’t be surprised if the platforms are busy, that’s all part of the Stampede experience!
Driving & Parking
Everything You Need to Know Before You Drive
While Calgary Transit is our top recommendation, driving to the Calgary Stampede can still be a great option, especially if you’re travelling with young children, coming from outside Calgary, or simply prefer having your own vehicle.
Just keep one thing in mind…
The earlier you arrive, the better your experience will be.
Traffic around Stampede Park gets noticeably busier throughout the day, and parking lots begin filling early, particularly on weekends, concert nights, and during the final few days of Stampede.
If you’re planning to drive, giving yourself plenty of extra time will make your day much less stressful.
Official Calgary Stampede Parking
The Calgary Stampede offers several official public parking lots on a first-come, first-served basis.
Daily Public Parking
$30 per vehicle
Available at:
- Lot 11 & Cowboys Casino Parkade P2
- 11 Avenue Lot
- Greenline Lot
Accessible parking is also available in Lot 10 at the same daily rate.
Reserved Parking
If you’d rather guarantee a parking spot, reserved parking is available in advance.
Reserved Parking
$65 per day
Benefits include:
- Guaranteed parking space
- In-and-out privileges throughout the day
- Convenient locations close to Stampede Park
Reserved parking is available in:
- Saddledome Lot A
- Accessible parking in Lot 10
Reservations are available until June 30 or while supplies last.
If you’re attending on a busy weekend or travelling from out of town, reserving a space can provide some extra peace of mind.
Nearby Private Parking Lots
Official Stampede parking isn’t your only option.
Throughout the neighbourhood surrounding Stampede Park, you’ll find numerous private parking lots operated by businesses, churches, and independent operators.
Prices typically range from around $10 to $40, depending on:
- The day you’re visiting
- How close the lot is to Stampede Park
- Special events taking place that day
If you’re comfortable walking a little farther, you can often save quite a bit compared to parking right beside the grounds.
Is Driving Worth It?
Honestly…
It depends.
Driving offers flexibility, but you’ll usually trade that convenience for heavier traffic and more expensive parking.
We’d consider driving if:
- You’re travelling with small children.
- You’re bringing a stroller or lots of gear.
- You’re visiting from outside Calgary.
- Mobility is a concern.
- You’re planning multiple stops throughout the day.
For everyone else, we’d still lean toward Calgary Transit.
Overnight Parking
Planning on leaving your vehicle overnight?
The Calgary Stampede does allow overnight parking in its official lots, but vehicles must be removed by 8:00 a.m. the following morning.
Oversized vehicles, RVs, trailers, and vehicles exceeding standard parking stall dimensions are not permitted.
Our Recommendation
If someone asked us whether they should drive or take transit…
We’d almost always recommend transit.
But if driving is the best option for your group, don’t let that discourage you.
Simply arrive early, expect a little extra traffic, and consider parking slightly farther from the grounds if it saves both time and money.
Sometimes a 10-minute walk is much easier than spending 30 minutes sitting in traffic.
Wandering Tip: Don’t automatically pull into the first parking lot you see. As you get closer to Stampede Park, you’ll notice dozens of independent parking lots with different prices. Taking a few extra minutes to compare your options could save you money, just remember that the cheapest lot isn’t always the closest, so factor in how far you’re willing to walk.
Uber & Taxis
A Convenient Alternative to Driving
If you don’t want to deal with parking or you’re planning to enjoy a few drinks during your Stampede visit, Uber or a taxi can be a great option.
The Calgary Stampede has designated pick-up and drop-off locations around Stampede Park, making it easy to arrive without worrying about where to park.
That said, there are a few things worth knowing before you book your ride.
Dedicated Uber Pick-Up & Drop-Off Zones
Uber, the Calgary Stampede’s official rideshare partner, operates several designated pick-up and drop-off locations around Stampede Park.
These include:
- Lot 11B near Cowboys Casino (North end)
- Erlton Exit, east of 3 Street S.E. (South end)
- Macleod Trail between 13 Avenue and 14 Avenue S.E. (West end)
- 10 Avenue east of 3 Street S.E. (Pick-up only)
Following the designated zones helps traffic flow more smoothly and makes it easier for drivers to find you.
Taxi Pick-Up & Drop-Off Locations
If you prefer taking a taxi, designated taxi zones are also available throughout Stampede.
You’ll find them at:
- Stampede Trail between 12 Avenue and 14 Avenue S.E.
- Lot 7/8 (South end of Stampede Park)
- Macleod Trail between 13 Avenue and 14 Avenue S.E.
Expect Surge Pricing
One thing we always recommend is checking your options before booking.
Uber prices can increase significantly during busy periods, especially:
- Right before the Evening Show
- Immediately after concerts
- After the nightly fireworks
- During weekends
Don’t forget to compare prices with Calgary’s taxi companies (Checker Cabs, Delta Cab, Associated Cab, and Calgary United Cabs). Many now have their own apps that allow you to check fares and book rides, and sometimes they can actually be the better value.
A Simple Way to Save Money
Here’s one of our favourite local tips.
Instead of requesting your Uber the moment you leave Stampede Park, walk a few blocks away from the busiest areas first.
You’ll often find:
- Lower surge pricing
- Shorter wait times
- Less traffic
- An easier pick-up experience
Sometimes a five to ten-minute walk can make a noticeable difference to both your fare and how quickly your driver reaches you.
Is Uber Worth It?
Absolutely, but mostly in the right situations.
We’d recommend Uber or a taxi if you’re:
- Staying outside downtown without easy transit access.
- Planning a date night.
- Enjoying the nightlife after Stampede.
- Travelling light.
- Looking for a convenient door-to-door option.
If you’re simply visiting Stampede for the day, Calgary Transit will usually be the faster and more affordable choice.
Wandering Tip: Before you book your ride home, compare Uber with a local taxi app. Depending on demand, the prices can be surprisingly close, and sometimes the taxi is actually cheaper. If you’re comfortable walking a few extra blocks away from the Stampede crowds before requesting your ride, you’ll often avoid the worst surge pricing and have a much easier pickup experience.
Walking to Stampede
Can You Walk to the Calgary Stampede?
Absolutely.
If you’re staying in downtown Calgary, walking to Stampede Park is one of the easiest ways to get there.
Many downtown hotels, restaurants, and attractions are within walking distance, allowing you to skip traffic, avoid parking fees, and enjoy the atmosphere as the city comes alive during Stampede.
It’s one of our favourite ways to experience Calgary in July.
Walking from Downtown
Depending on where you’re staying, the walk to Stampede Park can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
Popular areas within walking distance include:
- Downtown Core
- Beltline
- East Village
- Victoria Park
Along the way, you’ll likely pass plenty of fellow Stampede-goers, pop-up events, patios, and restaurants, making the walk part of the overall experience.
As always, practice the same awareness and caution you would in any busy downtown area, particularly later in the evening after concerts and the fireworks.
Is Walking Better Than Driving?
If you’re already staying downtown…
Yes.
Walking is often faster than trying to navigate road closures, waiting for rideshares, or sitting in traffic after a major event.
It’s also completely free.
If your hotel is within a comfortable walking distance, we’d seriously consider leaving the car parked for the day.
Cycling & Scooters
Cycling is one of the most underrated ways to get to the Calgary Stampede.
If you live nearby or enjoy riding around the city, dedicated bike parking is available throughout Stampede Park, making it a convenient option that avoids both traffic and parking fees.
Scooters are also welcome in designated parking areas around the grounds.
Bike & Scooter Parking
Dedicated bike and scooter parking zones are available at:
- Lot 7/8 (South end of Stampede Park)
- Lot 10/11 (North end of Stampede Park)
- 14 Avenue & Stampede Trail (Bike Parking)
- 14 Avenue & Agriculture Trail (Bike Parking)
- 13 Avenue & Stampede Trail (Scooter Parking)
Using these designated parking areas helps keep pathways clear and makes finding your bike or scooter much easier at the end of the night.
Is Cycling Worth It?
If you live within cycling distance, we’d definitely consider it.
It’s affordable, avoids traffic completely, and makes getting home after the fireworks much easier than waiting in vehicle traffic.
Just remember to bring a bike lock and, if you’re heading home after dark, make sure your lights are charged and working.
Wandering Tip: If you’re staying downtown, we’d skip the car altogether. Walking to Stampede is part of the experience, and it’s often the quickest way to get there. If you’re local and comfortable cycling, it’s one of the easiest ways to beat both the traffic and the crowds while enjoying Calgary’s extensive pathway network
Accessibility
Accessible Transportation & Parking
The Calgary Stampede offers a number of accessibility services to help make getting to and around Stampede Park as easy as possible.
Whether you’re driving, taking Calgary Transit, or attending with someone who requires mobility assistance, planning ahead can make your visit much smoother.
Accessible Parking
Accessible parking is available in Lot 10, conveniently located near Stampede Park.
The daily parking rate is the same as regular public parking, and accessible reserved parking is also available for those who wish to guarantee a spot in advance.
If accessible parking is important for your visit, we’d recommend reserving early whenever possible, as these spaces are limited.
Calgary Transit Accessibility
Both Victoria Park/Stampede Station and Erlton/Stampede Station are accessible and connect visitors directly to Stampede Park.
Calgary Transit is an excellent option for many guests using mobility devices, allowing you to avoid the congestion around Stampede while arriving close to the entrances.
Keep in mind that trains can become extremely busy during peak times, particularly after the Evening Show and fireworks, so allowing yourself extra travel time is always a good idea.
Getting Around Stampede Park
Once inside Stampede Park, you’ll find:
- Paved pathways throughout the grounds.
- Accessible ramps leading into buildings.
- Elevator access to GMC Stadium via the South Tower.
- Elevator access to The Big Four Roadhouse through the main entrance.
- Accessible washrooms located throughout the park.
- Designated companion washrooms for guests requiring assistance.
Wheelchair & Stroller Rentals
If you don’t have your own mobility equipment or stroller, Red Barn Rentals offers daily rentals inside Stampede Park.
Rental locations include:
- Stampede Trail Entrance
- Erlton Entrance
- The Big Four Roadhouse (Street Level)
Current rental rates include:
- Wheelchairs: $3 per hour
- Strollers: $3
- Storage Lockers: $5
- Large Item Storage: $5
A refundable $50 deposit and valid ID are required for wheelchair and stroller rentals.
Our Recommendation
If accessibility is an important part of your visit, we’d encourage arriving a little earlier than you normally would.
Having extra time allows you to find parking or transit, locate elevators and accessible entrances, and get settled before the crowds build.
One thing we’ve always appreciated about the Calgary Stampede is how helpful the volunteers and staff are. If you need assistance or aren’t sure where to go, don’t hesitate to ask, there are always people nearby who are happy to help.
Wandering Tip: Accessibility doesn’t stop once you arrive at Stampede Park. Think about your entire journey, from parking or transit to getting home afterwards. Giving yourself a little extra time at the beginning and end of your day will make the experience much more enjoyable and far less stressful.

After years of visiting the Calgary Stampede, we’ve learned that getting there is often the difference between a smooth, enjoyable day and a stressful one.
Here are some of our favourite local tips to help you make the most of your visit.
Arrive Earlier Than You Think
Whether you’re driving, taking transit, or planning to Uber, give yourself more time than Google Maps suggests.
Traffic builds throughout the day, trains become busier as the afternoon goes on, and parking lots begin to fill, especially on weekends and concert nights.
Arriving early doesn’t just reduce stress, it also gives you more time to explore everything included with your admission.
Don’t Rush Home After the Fireworks
This is probably our biggest tip.
The moment the fireworks end, thousands of people all try to leave at once.
Instead of joining the rush, slow things down.
Grab one last snack, browse the midway, or simply sit and enjoy the atmosphere for another 20–30 minutes.
By the time you’re ready to head home, the crowds have usually thinned considerably.
Make Park & Ride Your Secret Weapon
If you’re driving from outside the downtown core, consider parking at a Calgary Transit station instead of trying to park near Stampede Park.
It’s exactly what we do.
You’ll save money on parking, avoid downtown traffic, and the train drops you right at Stampede.
For us, it’s the perfect balance between convenience and affordability.
Check All Your Transportation Options
Don’t automatically assume Uber is your cheapest option.
Before booking your ride home, compare:
- Uber
- Local taxi companies
- Calgary Transit
Depending on the time of day and demand, the price difference can be surprising.
Be Prepared to Walk
No matter how you get to Stampede, you’ll probably be doing a fair bit of walking.
Whether it’s from your parking lot, the CTrain station, or your rideshare drop-off point, comfortable footwear is one of the best things you can bring.
Your feet will thank you by the end of the day.
Save Your Parking Location
If you decide to drive, take a quick photo of your parking lot number or drop a pin on your map before heading into Stampede.
After a full day of rides, food, concerts, and fireworks, many of the surrounding streets and parking lots start to look surprisingly similar.
It’s a simple trick that can save a lot of frustration at the end of the night.
