If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful summer hikes in Banff National Park, Sunshine Meadows should be at the top of your list.

Known for its colourful wildflowers, turquoise alpine lakes, and breathtaking mountain views, Sunshine Meadows offers an unforgettable hiking experience without requiring an all-day climb to reach the alpine.

Here’s everything you need to know before visiting.

Where is Sunshine Meadows?

Sunshine Meadows is located in Banff National Park, approximately 20 minutes from the Town of Banff.

To reach the hiking area, you’ll first head to Sunshine Village, where you’ll take the Banff Sunshine Gondola. During the summer season, visitors can also ride the Standish Chairlift for even easier access to the highest viewpoints.

The gondola ride itself is part of the experience, offering incredible views before your hike even begins.

Best Time to Visit Sunshine Meadows

The best time to visit is late July through early August.

This is when the alpine meadows are covered in colourful wildflowers, creating one of the most picturesque landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.

Although the hiking area typically opens earlier in the summer, some trails may still have patches of snow because of the higher elevation.

What You’ll See

One of the highlights of Sunshine Meadows is the variety of scenery packed into a relatively short hike.

Some of the most popular spots include:

  • Rock Isle Lake
  • Grizzly Lake
  • Laryx Lake
  • Endless alpine meadows
  • Panoramic mountain views

Every turn offers another postcard-worthy photo opportunity.

Is Sunshine Meadows Difficult?

One of the best things about Sunshine Meadows is that there’s something for everyone.

You’ll find:

  • Easy boardwalk walks
  • Family-friendly trails
  • Moderate hiking loops
  • Longer routes for experienced hikers

Since the gondola does most of the elevation gain, many visitors can enjoy alpine scenery without tackling a strenuous climb.

Wildlife You May See

Sunshine Meadows is home to a variety of wildlife.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Marmots
  • Pikas
  • Mountain goats
  • Ground squirrels
  • Birds native to the alpine environment

As always, remember to keep a safe distance and never feed wildlife.

What to Bring

Because you’re hiking at over 2,200 metres (7,200 feet), mountain weather can change quickly.

We recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A light jacket or rain layer
  • Bear spray if you’re planning longer hikes

Even on warm summer days, temperatures can be noticeably cooler than in Banff.

Is Sunshine Meadows Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

If you’re looking for an easy way to experience the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, Sunshine Meadows is one of the best places to visit during the summer.

The combination of alpine lakes, colourful wildflowers, mountain views, and accessible trails makes it one of our favourite hikes near Banff.

Whether you’re visiting for a couple of hours or spending the entire day exploring the different trails, Sunshine Meadows is a destination you’ll want to return to again and again.

Planning Your Visit?

If you’re visiting Banff between late July and early August, don’t miss Sunshine Meadows. It’s one of the most spectacular alpine experiences in Alberta and a must-add to your Banff itinerary. 🌼🏔️
