Is the Wapta Falls Hike Worth It? Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
If you’re planning a trip through Yoho National Park, make sure Wapta Falls is on your itinerary.

Before our visit, we had no idea there were two different access points—and we accidentally drove to the Wapta Falls Recreation Site instead of the trailhead. While the recreation site offers a viewpoint from above, it’s not where you’ll start the hike to the base of the falls.
Once we found the correct trailhead, the hike was well worth it.
Hike Overview
- Location: Yoho National Park, BC
- Distance: 2.4 km each way (4.8 km return)
- Time: 1–1.5 hours
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Cost: Free
What to Bring
We’d recommend bringing:
- Proper hiking shoes
- Plenty of water
- Snacks or a packed lunch
- A small backpack
- Layers, as mountain weather can change quickly
We actually weren’t very prepared—we showed up in comfy clothes with a camera bag, beef jerky, and water—but we’d definitely recommend packing a little better than we did!
What to Expect

The trail is well maintained and easy to follow, with a few steeper sections along the way. The hike to the falls is mostly downhill, so keep in mind you’ll be climbing back up on your return.
There are lots of opportunities to stop for photos, and if you arrive earlier in the day, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding the crowds.
And one final tip…
Don’t be like Adi. 😂 There’s no prize for getting to the waterfall first. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the experience.
Is It Worth It?
Without a doubt.

Wapta Falls offers one of the best effort-to-reward hikes in Yoho National Park. The trail is manageable for most people, and the views at the end make every step worthwhile.
