Adi and I have a rule about places we visit: if we’re still talking about it days later, it goes on the blog. The Saskatoon Farm went on the blog.

We made the drive out to Foothills County a little while back, not entirely sure what to expect, and honestly, we weren’t prepared for how genuinely lovely it was. The restaurant was delicious (we stayed longer than planned, which is always the sign of a good meal), we walked away with the most incredible chili oil from one of the vendors, and the whole atmosphere, the gardens, the old-fashioned street of shops, the greenhouses, felt like a place that was built slowly and with a lot of care. Which, it turns out, it was.

Paul and Karen Hamer started the Saskatoon Farm 37 years ago on an empty barley field where the Highwood and Sheep River meet. They planted every tree themselves, built every structure and it shows. The place has a warmth to it that you can’t manufacture.

The kind of spot you drive out to for the afternoon and end up staying until they close.

Which brings us to why we’re writing this right now: the Saskatoon Farm’s Annual Mother’s Day Market is happening on Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, and it is the best possible reason to make the drive.

There’s 60+ vendors, live music from local performers, interactive animal exhibits, family games and of course their award-winning Garden Centre stocked with annuals and perennials, fresh baked goods in the Bakery, yummy dishes in the Restaurant, and brunch buffet seatings available in the Red House if you want to make a full morning of it.

If you’re still figuring out what to do for Mother’s Day, this is it. It’s the kind of outing that feels special without being stiff, and the farm setting makes the whole thing feel a lot more memorable than another restaurant reservation.

Valid for Mother’s Day Market at The Saskatoon Farm

We had such a genuinely good time at the Saskatoon Farm on our visit, the chili oil alone was worth the drive, and we think the Mother’s Day Market is one of the nicest ways to spend a weekend morning in Calgary right now. Take the people you love, wander the vendors, eat something delicious, and just enjoy being somewhere that feels a little removed from the city for a few hours.

Because we believe we are all made to wander, and sometimes that means driving south on Highway 2 with nowhere to be until 5 PM. ✨
